It's been a good year
for Death Metal releases with the first half of 2012 seeing brilliant albums
from Cannibal Corpse, Aborted, Cattle Decapitation, Job For A Cowboy and
now Dying Fetus. With their seventh studio album 'Reign Supreme' they
definitely don't show any signs of slowing down. Bringing forth one of the most
well executed, technical, heavy and brutal albums of the year thus far.
Formed in 1991, Dying
Fetus have always impressed true Death Metal fans with their unique
offering of interesting song structure, laced with blast beats, complex riffs
and adding some more modern elements to keep things fresh. You know after
hearing the name of the band that these gentlemen mean business, and are all
about delivering some of the most aggressive music out there. It's hard to
believe whilst listening to Dying Fetus that there are only 3 members,
with front man and guitarist John Gallagher being the only original member
left.
Now, onto the album.
The production and
sound quality on here is absolutely stunning. Starting with some technical
flare on the albums opening track 'Invert The Idols' and then progressing into
brutal roars and insanely fast drumming. You know straight away that this is
going to be a good album, it gets a lot better from there though. Some of the
riffs on the here are absolutely insane, not a whole lot of solos but when they
do pop up they make an impact. John Gallagher's voice is the perfect sound for
what Dying Fetus are, brilliant flow and downright brutal although
difficult to understand at times. There aren't many faults you can think of
considering what he's done with this band for the past 21 years.
The lyrics on Dying
Fetus albums have usually been based around politics and war, and it's
pretty much the same on this album, with the addition of drugs, religion and
violence. The song 'From Womb To Waste' features one of the most brutal spoken
word intros I've ever heard, the official video for that track can be seen
below. While the first half of 'Reign Supreme' is impressive, I feel the last
half really shows the band at their best with songs like 'Devout Atrocity' and
'The Blood Of Power' which are amazing. Once again I have to mention how good
the sound quality is on here, they've done an excellent job in that department.
This band is probably as technical as I would go, I do love good Tech Death,
but not too crazy as I feel it overpowers the music at times and becomes
unbearable to listen.
I feel this is Dying
Fetus' best album but at the same time it isn't anything innovative. If
you're already a fan of the band then you'll love this album no doubt, and if
you're new to them but like Death Metal then be sure to check them out. Dying
Fetus are most certainly one the pioneers of brutal Death Metal and are
Reigning Supreme (no pun intended) along with fellow kings of the genre,
Cannibal Corpse. This album proves that and then punches you in the face!
Standout Tracks:
Subjected To A Beating, Devout Atrocity, The Blood Of Power.
