It's fairly easy to
get lost amongst all the new bands in the Deathcore/Death Metal scene at the
moment. There's almost a new band born every day now that pops out an EP to try
and get their name out there, some succeed and some you never hear from again. Empires
Fall from Geelong in Victoria aren't one to forget any time soon, with the
release of their debut EP titled 'The Tyrants Genocide.'
Recorded at Complex
Studios in Melbourne, home of Roman Koester (The Red Shore/Boris The Blade)
earlier this year, I finally have the pleasure of hearing this brutal piece of
work. With all the promotion and hard work these guys have been doing all year,
they sure didn't disappoint. 'The Tyrants Genocide' is seven tracks of
technical brutality that will keep the listener interested from beginning to
end. I hate using the term 'Deathcore' because I think it doesn't do a band
justice when they are this good, considering there are a lot of boring bands
that get the 'Deathcore' tag. Empires Fall have a very strong 'Death
Metal' influence that makes their sound stand out and punch you in the face.
The impressive solos on this EP really grabbed my attention straight away such
as in the song 'Dreaming Of Eradication', it's a nice change from breakdown
after breakdown. It has me excited for what they could possibly achieve with a
full length album which I'm sure we will see in the near future. Empires
Fall really do have talent when it comes to how they lay out their songs,
you can tell a lot of thought went into the writing process here. The drumming
is also extremely impressive, with super-fast blast beats and the use of double
bass which will definitely catch your attention upon first listen. Brutal, is
just one word that comes to mind when describing the vocals, very fast paced in
parts and you get the odd pig squeal here and there, a perfect fit for the
music this band generates. While listening to the EP I did have a thought that
this is a very solid effort for their first release. Some bands don't sound
this good even when they're two or three albums into their career. For a young
band they sure do have a mature sound that will only benefit them for what lies
ahead.
With such a fast
paced, brutal, technical and well-structured debut from these guys, I'm quite
sure they will be getting quite a bit of attention from the Aussie Death Metal
scene. Plus with their recent 'The Forsaken Genocide' tour alongside Hunt
The Haunted, they will be gaining more fans with their live shows which I
hope to see for myself soon enough.
