Not trying to
reinvent the wheel. We keep it simple. We keep it real.
That's exactly what
Obey The Brave have done here with the release of their debut album 'Young
Blood.' The group is made up of ex-members of Despised Icon and Blind
Witness, creating a monsterous Metalcore influenced supergroup of sorts.
Most known for being
the front man of the mighty Despised Icon, Alex Erian uses his powerful
Hardcore style of vocal and delivers an incredible performance on this album.
Alex is a true legend amongst Deathcore/Metalcore bands and is quite often
featured as a guest vocalist on tracks from the likes of Ingested, Signal
The Firing Squad and Beheading Of A King just to name a few. What
you have here is a straight up in your face approach that delivers everything
that it was set out to achieve. Automatically fans of Despised Icon are going
to check this out and they'll probably either love it or go back to DI who are
much more extreme and heavier. Of course, much like any other Metalcore release
there are breakdowns aplenty and as I listen to the tracks it all kind of
reminds me of an early Parkway Drive. The way the songs are structured and the
hint of melody, it's a simple formula that is enjoyable and will win them a lot
of fans. You can tell the musicians in this band are not new to the game and
they each showcase their talent enough to make the album sound very
professional. There's a little 30 second interlude halfway through the album
which is pretty much a rap beat, whilst pointless it isn't enough to annoy me
or give a lower rating. There's a bit of everything on 'Young Blood' for all
fans of heavy music, there really isn't a bad song on here and it's a very
strong debut. It's a fun album to listen to and you don't have to look very far
into it because what you hear is what you get. There's nothing technical or complicated
about it, 'Young Blood' is just a damn good Metalcore album that will impress
most people that hear it. For me personally, I haven't heard a better release
from the genre since Unearths 'Darkness In The Light' which was incredible.
Maybe if 'Young' Blood' had a little bit more variety and less breakdowns, it
would be right up there with one of the better albums of the year. I highly recommend
this to everyone.
For fans of: Despised
Icon, Parkway Drive, and Terror.
Standout tracks: Live
and Learn, It Starts Today, Burning Bridges.
8/10
