First of all before I get started. This
band, who are only just getting started, are in desperate need of a drummer(preferably Melbourne based). So if you’re reading this and know of anyone that
can play this style of music then please hit up the band via Facebook so that
they can begin to play live shows as soon as possible.
With a growing emergence of Deathcore
bands, it’s always refreshing to hear something new and exciting in the genre.
I give to you, Carveresque!
Here is a breakdown of their 3 track self
titled release giving you an insight into what I hear and hopefully what you
hear when you listen to this great debut.
Enjoy.
Carveresque – The opener
sets it off on a high note, beginning not with a breakdown as many deathcore
bands might have but hypnotizing guitar strumming with
thunderous drum rolls backed by the gritty and blackened metal vocals. From then on it’s full steam ahead as these young men from
Melbourne unleash a new style of heaviness, which is refreshing, yet familiar. When the inevitable breakdown does appear, it absolutely
destroys rather than bores. This is the first taste we
get of Carveresque. Their very first release and after many listens I can
honestly say this band is full of promise and obvious talent. Did I mention
they’re looking for a drummer? Song structure wise, this track is quite
brilliant and it involves many elements that shine through, including great
build-ups which lead to heavy breakdowns, classy guitar work and room to
breathe before the next heavy outburst takes place. I can’t wait to see this
performed live sometime soon.
The Ruler Of Dreams – Another slow build up
to what is another awesome showcase of heaviness from Carversesque. I’ve racked
my brain to try and think of other bands to compare them to, but I can’t.
Unique is a tremendous quality to have in this genre these days; it will carry
you to that next level. This track is
probably my favourite of the three, although not the heaviest but more or less
the most accessible and well structured. It delivers melody and some Behemoth
influences, the pace taking a slightly less frantic path and slowing down which
allows the vocals to shine through.
Terminate (Featuring Colin Jeffs) – We end
here on a heavy note and what is sure to be a favourite amongst listeners. There’s always something special about a bands first
release with that raw sound before things start to get overproduced. That sound
is what attracts me to this, it’s not as polished but still kicks just as much
ass regardless. Colin Jeffs (ex Aversions Crown vocalist) helps give this track
a bit more aggression with his signature vocals. Accompanied by some
extremely well executed guitar work and ferocious blast beats, Terminate will
leave you wanting more.
Carveresque appears to be a breath of
fresh air into Australia’s Deathcore scene, one that may set a standard for
underground bands to come. The needed blasting is excellently executed and the
drums are all around quite well performed. The guitars balance technical riffs
with the low end chugging quite well also on all three tracks. Despite a few
slight flaws, which is inevitable with a first demo and which they will no doubt smooth over with time and experience, this is an enjoyable and extremely well executed release that the current scene really needs.
