Perth based band Make Them Suffer have stormed onto the Australian music scene over the past 2 years with an EP titled Lord Of Woe and lots of touring both local and over the other side of this country. Neverbloom is the name of their brand new debut album and it has been released via Roadrunner Records, a massive record label and Make Them Suffers new home. For those of you who are new to this band, here's a quick little rundown of what their sound is all about. There are 6 members who play Death Metal with symphonic elements making their sound very unique and nothing quite like what other bands are doing right now. Make Them Suffer are also well known for their incredibly heavy breakdowns that will shatter your speakers.
I recieved this album
a day before it's official release and I could not wait to put it on and hear
it. It lived up to every expectation I had and then some. The vocals are
impressive and you can hear a Black Metal influence in there with those
piercing and haunting screams from Sean Harmanis. Symphonic Death Metal
is relatively still unchattered waters and not many bands will approach this
style. Bleeding Through are probably one of the more well known acts to
do such a style and succeed. But having said that, Make Them Suffer are
not only doing it right but are excelling at it. This isn't your everyday
'Deathcore' release, trust me. It's a lot more special with well constructed
songs that feature bone crushing guitars, heavy pounding drums, haunting piano
keys and the odd violin sample. The title track 'Neverbloom' was
released earlier in the year along with a video, clocking in at just over seven
minutes long. This song is a great way to introduce someone to Make Them
Suffer, because it includes all the elements and it shows the band doing
what they do best. The vocals are passionate, just like the lyrics which are
very well written. Some may feel the symphonic parts may drown out the other
instruments, but I don't think that's the case. If anything they all work
together to create this magical masterpiece and gives the listener a diverse
yet colourful experience. Without the piano it would still be well crafted
music, just not as atmospheric and intriguing to listen to. 'Weeping
Wastelands' which appeared on their EP is also on this album, they have
added some 'djent' style influence which is a very particular style of guitar
tone made known by bands such as Meshuggah, Textures and Born Of Osiris. 'Maelstrom'
was released in 2011 as a single and in my opinion is the best track they have
done, it's insanely heavy and it features everything that I feel Make Them
Suffer are all about. Beautiful piano work, crunching guitars, thunderous
drums and ferocious vocals all in an atmospheric yet monsterous setting.
I've been telling my
friends about this band for quite a while now, some love them, some don't. You
can't please everyone, but those who have enjoyed the Make Them Suffer experience
have been very impressed and excited about this band. I can see they have a
very bright future ahead after this amazing full length debut. Hopefully the
rest of the world get to see one of Australia's best new bands do what they do
best, as they also put on some of the most high energy perfomances I've seen.
Standout tracks:
Neverbloom, Maelstrom, Elegies, Widower.
9/10
