Headwound The Pony - Merchant Of Misery

Don't judge a band by its name, that is very true in this case. I give you Headwound The Pony and their debut album titled 'Merchant Of Misery' which will pleasantly surprise those who like their music fast, heavy, technical and brutal.

Headwound The Pony are a 6-piece Death Metal band from Brisbane. They're relatively new on the scene and looking to make an impact with this debut album, and they've done a damn good job of that. What you have here are technical and blistering riffs, bone crushing breakdowns, blasting drums and devastatingly heavy vocals. Fitting in with other Australian bands such as Signal The Firing Squad, Thy Art Is Murder and Boris The Blade just to name a few. But there's something a bit different with HTP, I'm not exactly sure what it is but it works and I like it. Maybe it's the Slam influence which I can hear when listening, making the album sound even heavier. The production on 'Merchant Of Misery' is top notch with Andy Marsh (Thy Art Is Murder) showing his very talented Engineering and Mixing skills.

9 tracks of pure brutality, clocking in at just less than 30 minutes. HTP are definitely one of the heavier bands on the scene that I've heard lately which I love. The songs are well structured and there's a nice catchy groove that gives the album a good flow. Each track is different in their own right and you don't find yourself getting all mixed up as the album progresses. Some of the best modern Death Metal in the World is coming out of Australia and Headwound The Pony are on the list of bands to watch out for. It'll be great to see them hit the road and support this new album by playing shows and getting their name out there. Go and give them a like on Facebook and order a copy of this very impressive debut from a band that I hope to see and hear more from.

Standout tracks: Anthropogenic Debris, Merchant Of Misery and An Altar Of Bones.

For fans of: Aversions Crown, Signal The Firing Squad and Oceano.

7.5/10
